Acme Archtops builds laminated wood parts for archtop guitar builders. Our tops are laminated from solid spruce, in three layers of approximately .050in (1 1/4 mm) each. These robust layers give you leeway for voicing, and there’s a lot of material there for scratch and dent rehabilitation just before you apply finish. The show layer of the top is the face you see; we pick this for appearance. The bottom layer, that is, the bottom of the top plate, will almost inevitably contain small sap streaks and the like; these are not structural defects, but only cosmetic, and it would take a very special effort to see this surface inside the built guitar. All layers of spruce are vertical grain.

Al Duvall, a grandchild of the Great Depression, was one of many unemployed musicians in 1932 who was sent via time machine into the future to find work, as part of the WPA program. His timing couldn't have been better, for IN TIMES LIKE THESE (SM) we could all use an entertainer whose charm and musicianship once made the Great Depression so great. Hopefully, Al will bring a little bit of Depression to you with his cloud-scattering mirth.

AmandaLynn is a singer-songwriter based out of the Tampa Bay area. She got her start in music at an early age, singing before she could even talk. Her classical music training started at age eight with the obligatory piano lessons, later moving to clarinet. During middle school, she picked up guitar and ukulele, along with other odd instruments, and began writing songs. When AmandaLynn and her father started seriously performing together, she became enamored with the stage and performing as a singer-songwriter. Clarinet took her to the University of Tennessee to major in music education, but it wasn’t the career she wanted.

Amber Rozel has been teaching musicians of all ages for over 20 years. She has been making the magic happen on ukulele for 5 years and recently received the coveted Level 3 Teachers Certificate from the JHUI program. She performs with regional orchestras, the Bay Chamber Players, her (new!) band Evergreen Road, and with anyone that wants to have fun.

I was born September 16, 1954, raised in Nazareth, PA, home of Martin Guitar. In my teens I became inspired by meeting some of the world’s finest guitar builders. This led me to play guitar and become a builder. Visiting the shop of one of Martin’s craftsmen encouraged me to buy one of his guitars. I was overwhelmed by the craftsmanship and ease of playing. At that point I knew I wanted to build an instrument of that quality. I started building acoustic guitars in 1977 in collaboration with friend Dick Boak.

In 1993 I began an apprentice with Archtop guitar builder, Robert Benedetto. Working for Bob for several years was an experience of a lifetime. Teaching me his secrets and passions for the Archtop guitar that has taken him some 30 years to master. Together we built some of the worlds finest Archtop guitars. Gradually, I started incorporating Bob’s secrets with my own ideas. A native of Oxfordshire, England, Andrew worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Research Labs before deciding to follow my passion for building stringed instruments. Andrew studied at the Welsh School of Violin Making and Repair, near Cardiff. After graduating Andrew joined the restoration workshops of Bein and Fushi in Chicago to apprentice under the guidance of master cello restorer, Russell Wagner. In 1996 Andrew opened my own workshop in Santa Rosa, California , providing restoration services to the violin trade. Regular clients include some of the world’s leading violin dealers. These days Andrew spends most all of my time building new instruments. My violins, violas and cellos are played by professional and amateur musicians across the US and in Europe.

Andy Powers grew up in a music-loving family in Oceanside, California. At the age of five Andy, the son of a carpenter and his artist wife, had his first workbench and shortly thereafter began playing piano. Andy took up playing the guitar when he was eight. In a house where musical instruments, tools and wood were all readily available, curiosity got the better of him and he began his first attempts at building guitars before the age of ten. With design and sound refinement the instruments began to improve tremendously, and Andy began selling the instruments to customers while he was still a teenager. Having been encouraged by his parents to pursue the arts, he began to explore the world of traditional inlayed art, using his instruments as a canvas.

In the early 60s, guitar virtuoso and game-changing engineer Charlie Kaman set out to find the sound he always knew but never heard. He discovered it in 1966, the Ovation guitar was born.

The story of Ovation guitars-and the ground-breaking technology behind them-begins with Charles H. Kaman, an aeronautical engineer known for his pioneering work in helicopter and aerospace design.

Released with much fanfare in January of 1984, the Macintosh was the first affordable computer to include a Graphical User Interface. It was built around the new Motorola 68000 chip, which was significantly faster than previous processors, running at 8 MHz. The Mac came in a small beige case with a black and white monitor built in. It came with a keyboard and mouse, and had a floppy drive that took 400k 3.5in disk the first personal computer to do so. It originally sold for $2,495.

Gut strings were already produced in Padoa, Verona, Venice, Treviso and Vicenza since the beginning of the 17th century. Documents of the time show that such production lasted uninterruptedly well into the 20th century. Argapa Ukuleles is not a manufacturer comparable to bigger and well known brands. I make the instruments in my spare time, and between the day job and the kids I don't have too much of that. I have sold most of the ukes I've built so far, and I have an order list that will keep me occupied a while. After I'm done with that I will attempt to build un-ordered ukuleles and decide everything about them myself. If anyone is interested when I'm done with one I'll consider selling it.

Beltona began as a partnership between Steve Evans and Bill Johnson in the UK in 1990. A luthier and engineer respectively and sharing an interest in resonator instruments, they set out to produce a couple of instruments for themselves replicating the best features of the originals but also making adjustments and improvements where they were needed.

Ben Carr is a Southern Vermont based musician focused on performance and education of drum set, percussion, and ‘ukulele. He fronts his own band, the Ben Carr Music Project, performing 'ukulele and drum inspired original music. Ben also appears with regional acts Mo Ambesa, Sunny Lowdown, and Patty Carpenter, as well as performing solo.

Ben Carr Music also provides live sound reinforcement, sound design, recording, mixing and editing.

Ben Hassenger’s musical career began in the early 1970s when he was arrested for playing “Smoke on the Water” on accordion and singing in animal sounds in the cafeteria at Lansing Community College. It was the start of something special, for sure.

Benny Chong taught himself to play the ukulele when he was about 11 years old. After nine years or so, he virtually put the ukulele away for some thirty-five years. Benny was the guitarist with the Ali’is, the band that backed up Don Ho. In 2000, He was invited him to be one of the four artists in “The Art of Solo ukulele”, a concert series that led to a CD and a public TV special. These events revitalized his interest in the ukulele, resulting in his album.

Gigging professionals demand the Bailey endpin attachment system that’s safe, secure and fits over pickup jacks (or any endpin strap button). Other straps have extremely weak “slot and hole”" endpin attachments methods that become baggy and loose sometimes resulting in dropped instruments and damage. Don‘t trust a strip of leather with a hole and slot design to be secure.

At the ripe old age of ten, Bill Gagnon was given his first guitar. A beautiful electric on which he taught himself the magic of music and triggering his passion for the instrument. As the years progressed, so did he and in highschool, his father, trading in an intsrument of his own, purchased an acoustic so his son could continue developing the natural talents he appeared to have been born with. Bill took to the acoustic like a fish to water, the guitar and his voice, complimenting each other perfectly. The Guitar. Bill’s key to a wonderful world of beauty and expression, a world he knew he wanted to share with all.

With great sadness in our hearts, the man we know as Bill Lawrence in the music industry passed away on November 2, 2013 at approximately 9:20AM. Bill was a strong and courageous man. Even in his last few days, Bill fought to live. He’d talk about Music, Pickups & Guitars -- and Life, and we, at his company, were still working because this is what Bill Lawrence wanted to know -- that his company & legacy are carrying on as usual.

Bill Tapia (January 1, 1908 – December 2, 2011), known as “Uncle Bill” and “Tappy”, was an American musician, born to Portuguese parents. At age 8, Tapia was already a professional musician, playing “Stars and Stripes Forever” for World War I troops in Hawaii.

Bill Tapia(tm) was celebrated worldwide as the 'Duke of Uke'. He performed with Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, and just about everyone who was anyone in the early Hawaiian music scene.

He taught ukulele to Shirley Temple, Clark Gable and many others from Hollywood's Golden Era. In Bill's hands, the ukulele became a magical instrument.

An expert in slack key guitar, steel guitar, and ukulele, Wynne is best known for his exceptional skill in the traditional Hawaiian art of falsetto singing for which he was awarded first prize – a Hula Records recording contract – in the 2005 Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest. Wynne learned practically everything he knows about Hawaiian music through the careful study of recordings – a collecting frenzy which has a resulted in an enviable library of more than 25,000 rare Hawaiian music recordings which he now shares via his 24-hour-a-day internet-based radio station, Ho`olohe Hou Radio (//hoolohehou.com/). Wynne has twice hosted his own TV specials from Honolulu as part of the Pakele Live series and appeared more than 20 times at the New York Botanical Gardens as part of its “Visions of Hawaii” exhibit.

After studying performance on saxophone and guitar in the University of Wisconsin system, Gordon Bischoff proceeded to receive training in violin repair in 1974 at Redwing Technical College in Redwing, Minnesota. Using the skills and techniques from that training and incorporating every bit of printed material available on the subject he went on to pursue his true interest...guitars.

My name is Duane Heilman, and I am a luthier and owner of Black Bear Guitars and Ukuleles, a one man shop located in Yakima, Washington, in the U.S. I have been designing, building, and repairing stringed instruments since 1991, and creating ukuleles since 1998. My designs and construction techniques have grown out of years of study and observation of vintage and modern ukes. I try to incorporate my own artistic sense into each instrument as well, and sometimes the results can be quite different and full of surprises -- even to me!

Blackbird Guitars was founded by Joe Luttwak and Kyle Wolfe and now includes fellow designer Troy Stevens. After years searching for a compact guitar worth bringing along for the ride, all they could find was thin sounding and fragile. THE MOONLIGHTERS have been a part of the New York City jazz and pop music scenes since they formed in 1998. Based around a core of harmonized vocal duets backed by warm acoustic instruments including Hawaiian lap steel guitar, ukulele, guitar and bass, they explore traditional and classic tunes with a unique, romantic approach that is appealing to listeners of all ages.

One of the first things we learned when we started building in 04’, was that there is no equal to a traditionally hand carved Archtop Guitar. The solid wood plates of the body give off a rich, full tone that cannot be equaled by a laminated production guitar. Using tradition as a base for all our instruments we can make adjustments that allow us to build anything from the finest Jazz Instrument to a screaming Rock-n-Roll Beast.

Our cases provide protection for your instrument combined with the convenient portability of a carefully designed gig bag. The most important feature of any soft case is the padding. We use EVA closed cell foam for the body and sides of the case. We also laminate an additional 1/2in pillow of open-cell foam in the peghead area of stringed instruments as a shock absorber.

John (Colly) Norman was born in the late 40’s and grew up in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. “When I was 18, hanging around as a teenager in Miami, I had a friend named Skip Ruck whose brother was always in their parents’ garage building guitars. Though I never met the brother, the idea of building a musical instrument intrigued me throughout the next thirty five years of construction, custom woodworking, aviation, and other creative endeavors.”

The aim of these schools was to give people an opportunity to develop new skills as their agricultural opportunities dwindled and moved to the cities.

Breedlove Guitars was established in 1990 by luthiers Larry Breedlove and Steve Henderson, while working at Taylor Guitars. After moving to Oregon, Breedlove and Henderson began specializing in custom, fingerstyle six and twelve string guitars. In 1991 the first Breedlove guitar model appeared, after experiments with the JLD bridge truss system and various bracing techniques. Around 1994, Larry‘s brother, Kim Breedlove, joined Larry and Steve as a master craftsman. Breedlove strives to be environmentally conscious, and is “dedicated to selecting alternatives to endangered rainforest woods.” Breedlove has since expanded to include mandolins and ukuleles.

Griffin Ukuleles is really a one man band. Just one old guy who loves woodworking and discovered the joy of the ukulele pretty late in life. Twenty some years ago I retired from a long career as an insurance broker and promised myself that I would spend the rest of my days creating beautiful things . I have kept that promise and have spent the ensuing years painting, carving, writing local history books, and creating whatever satisfied my artistic and aesthetic sense. A few years back I discovered the ukulele and my fascination and obsession began. After I had made a few, and joined the local ukulele society B.U.G. (Bellingham Ukulele Group) the word got around and people began to ask if they could buy one of my ukuleles.

Brian Moore Guitars was founded in June of 1992 by Patrick Cummings, Brian Moore and Kevin Kalagher. The first part of Brian Moore Guitars history begins in 1991, when Brian Moore, who was working as an assistant to Ned Steinberger, at Steinberger Sound, met Patrick Cummings, who was hired by Gibson Guitars, as General Manager of several Gibson divisions including Steinberger.

Aloha my name is Bryan L. Tolentino. I am a self taught ‘ukulele player. I started playing the ‘ukulele at the age of 10. At the age of 12, my best friend Asa Young first introduced me to playing Hawaiian music on the ‘ukulele. Our early influences were the musical groups, “The Son’s of Hawai’i” and “The Sunday Mānoa.” After graduating from St. Louis High School in 1979, my friends and I decided to form a musical group called “The Side Order Band.” The group consisted of Asa Young on 12-string guitar, Delwin Beazley on 6-string guitar, and Chris Kamaka on upright bass, and me on ‘ukulele. We performed at various functions throughout the island of O’ahu.

Since 1966, we have been serving the music community through our Retail Store, Repair Shop, Teaching Center and Manufacturing Facility. The heart of our business is focused on all things related to acoustic music. We specialize in, but are not limited to, Folk, Bluegrass, Irish, Native American and World music.

Buffalo Brothers Guitars’ story started in 1971 when Bob Page started up The Guitar Store in Pasadena,California. Bob used all the knowledge he picked up working at Eagle Music in Los Angeles, selling used guitars before they became extremely valuable vintage artifacts of guitar history. Bob’s younger brother Tim, a junior in high school, worked there during summer vacation and any time he had a few days off from school.

But to the Master luthier and craftsman John Buscarino, this is only a beginning. John is one of the few luthiers working today; a solo artisan handcrafting guitars suited to each customer’s personal needs. His instruments are prized not just for the beautiful sounds they produce, but also as the cherished possessions they inevitably become. Guitar player Steve Morse considers his Buscarino guitars “treasured works of art,” as do many of John’s customers. The Bushman brand was created in January, 1996 by John Hall. John’s love for the harmonica started when he was 5 years old and his grandpa gave him one. A music loving family made it easy to stick with the instrument allowing him to play it at church and family reunions. On a summer’s evening in 1990, he walked by the Slippery Noodle in Indianapolis and heard a harmonica player wailing the blues, and it was love at first sound!

Bushman Music Works, know as a harmonica company started a line of ukuleles, Bushman Ukulele. Later sold to a company in CA. No word on what's going on with the brand as of 2020.

"Byron Yasui" has been on the music faculty at theUniversity of Hawaii in his native Honolulu since 1972, where he teaches music theory, composition, and jazz improvisation. His experiences as a classroom instructor of 'ukulele include workshops at the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum Expositions of 2001, 2002, and 2003 (all on the east coast), the 2004 UkeFestWest in Santa Cruz, California, the Ukulele Guild of Hawai'i" annual conventions of 2002, 2003, and 2004, countless workshops at the University of Hawai'i Windward Community College since 2002, the Aloha Music Camps of 2004 and 2005 (Molok'i), and various one day workshops on all of the Hawaiian islands since 2000. Many of these workshops were tied in with his participation as an `ukulele soloist in concerts at the various venues.

The Seydel family were originally miners in Saxony. In the preface to the 1904 catalog, Frank Henry Martin explained to potential customers, “How to build a guitar to give this tone is not a secret. It takes care and patience. Care in selecting the materials, laying out the proportions, and attending to the details which add to the player's comfort. Patience in giving the necessary time to finish every part. A good guitar cannot be built for the price of a poor one, but who regrets the extra cost for a good guitar?” Almost eighty years have passed since Frank Henry Martin authored this statement of policy, but it still is an accurate expression of Martin's ongoing commitment to quality.

Roger Kitchens comes from a long history of music. His father was a professional mandolin player who started playing in the 1940’s. His uncle played drums professionally for many years. His brother and cousin are both drummers. His daughter plays piano and guitar. Roger grew up with instruments all around him and he has played the guitar since the late 70’s. His love for music is almost matched by his love of woodworking. He began woodworking projects shortly after his marriage in 1983, and has built several pieces of furniture for clients over the years. In 1996 he decided to pursue his real dream and build his first archtop guitar -no small undertaking. His wife Sherrie and daughter Courtney were the inspiration for the name which is interwoven into the logo. They have had a tremendous influence in many decisions about the instruments. Courtney has always loved working with her hands and does custom inlay work.

The Cal-Mum Uke Club is comprised of 5th graders at Caledonia-Mumford Elementary School, a public school in New York State. Students attend one day after school and during lunch time to practice and record songs that are available on our club’s web page. Students perform as an ukulele group with the band and chorus throughout the school year.

In 1950, the manufacturer, inventor and luthier Mario Maccaferri launched the polystyrene moulded Islander® ukulele with a decent success : 9 millions of his plastic ukuleles were sold in twenty years. The basic version was sold for $5.95, then reduced to $3.95.

Chord is software for creating staffless lead sheets (also known as chord charts) in PostScript format. Chord was developed by Martin Leclerc and Mario Dorion. This project has been inactive for several years. It was forked in 2007 to a project called Chord (pronounced as chord-ee-ee)

Chord or ChordPro is the name of a simple text format for the notation of lyrics with chords. Although primarily intended for guitarists, it can be used for all kinds of musical purposes.

The Chord format is invented by the original authors of the Chord program, Mario Dorion and Martin Leclerc. For unknown reasons the users of the format started to call it ChordPro.

Several tools exist that can process data in ChordPro format: to print nice song sheets, create web pages, or to transform it in into a format suitable for other tools.

I work alone hand building a variety of instruments beside the beach on the beautiful west coast of Ireland. I am in my fourth decade of guitar making and it is still the best job in the world. And, so far, I get paid to do it. Nothing could be better!

Christopher Davis-Shannon's music is the essence of honest simplicity. As a JAZZ GUITARIST, Chuck broke into the Philly Jazz Scene with the Chuck Anderson Trio in 1973. The group featured Al Stauffer on bass and rotated Tim Paxon, Ray Deely and Darryl Brown on drums. The trio played concerts throughout the east coast and recorded its first album in 1975. the album, originally titled Mirror Within a Mirror is included in a compilation CD titled The Vintage Tracks. This CD, released in 2005, contains all of the trio recordings from the 70’s.

Noted as a COMPOSER as well as a concert guitarist, Chuck has recorded 7 CDs: Passages from the End of Autumn, Kaleidophon, The Art of the Neo-Classical Guitar, Christmas Wishes, The International Collection, Angel Blue, Music from the Light, and The Vintage Tracks.

As an AUTHOR, Chuck has been published by several companies. Publications include: Music Pursuing the Horizon, An Improvisational Approach to Rock and Blues Guitar, Reflections for Guitar, The Modular Phonetic Rhythm System, Master Picking and The 6 Secrets of Guitar Fingering including Scale Charting. New books include: Mastering the Modes, The Private Music Teacher’s Guide and High Tech Guitar, A new series called Unlocking the Guitar will feature topics such as learning the notes on the neck, strums, tunings etc. He also developed and was featured in a popular video series called Harmonic Tonalities, The Songwriter’s Master Classes.

Inspiration came in the Spring of 2004 when Bill (aka Papa,) with twin boys in tow, attended the first ever Cigar Box Festival in Northern Kentucky. He was amazed at the look and sound of guitars that were fabricated from simple cigar boxes. As a woodworker he knew he had the familiarity and aptitude with wood, and the passion for music to craft something real. And so it began. The genesis of Papa’s Boxes started with a simple soprano ukulele. Papa’s Boxes attended the NYC Ukulele Festival as a vendor for the first time with one simple “build it yourself” uke kit. By 2006, one of Papa’s Boxes ukuleles had been inducted into the National Cigar Box Guitar Museum. Many of our first instruments didn’t have a clear classification such as banjo, mandolin, guitar, etc. But over the course of several years and through a ton of trial and error, our growing crew at Papa’s Boxes honed and reworked the designs and began to master specific instruments. This year has ushered in an even more interesting and diverse assortment of instruments from sopranos, concerts, tenors, and baritones in the Papa’s Boxes ukulele quiver.

Growing up in Hawaii, Stuart Yoshida started playing guitar in 1975. In college he studied Mechanical Engineering and also took time to learn music theory. At age 43 after ten years of trying to memorize banjo tab and then play it back, my wife’s grandmother gave me a 70 year old Columbia Hawaiian soprano ukulele that had been in her closet for more than 50 years. To please grandma, I took the uke and bought an instruction book. But I was tired of memorizing music out of books!

DR actually began as an idea that Al Dronge (the founder of Guild Guitars) passed along to his son Mark Dronge, founder of DR HandMade Strings.

In 1989, DR Strings re-introduced hand-made round core string making to the general market. It requires a lot of skill, time and care, but we feel it’s worth it because we can hear the difference between a handmade string and a machine made string. If we can hear it, of course players will hear it.

David Gill is a retired mechanical engineer turned luthier. He first started building dulcimers, and a couple mandolins, before beginning to build custom ukuleles full time for a nationally known instrument company. After a couple years, he went out on his own to build soprano and concert sized ukuleles. Currently, he predominately builds more concerts than anything else.

DaSilva Ukulele Co. in Berkeley, California is the workshop of Michael DaSilva where he makes high-quality , handcrafted ukuleles. Daisy Rock Guitars mission is to provide females of all ages with whatever it takes to learn to play guitar or bass.

I was born September 16, 1954, raised in Nazareth, PA, home of Martin Guitar. In my teens I became inspired by meeting some of the world’s finest guitar builders. This led me to play guitar and become a builder. Visiting the shop of one of Martin’s craftsmen encouraged me to buy one of his guitars. I was overwhelmed by the craftsmanship and ease of playing. At that point I knew I wanted to build an instrument of that quality. I started building acoustic guitars in 1977 in collaboration with friend Dick Boak.

The Daluke (derived from Dale’s Ukuleles) journey began over a decade ago when Dale made his first ukulele. His goal has always to been to build from the finest of woods, displaying the beauty found in each piece. Although luthier techniques have many commonalities, Dale has developed his own unique building style including many jigs and tools to improve his craft.

Dan Sawyer “Soybean” is a composer and musician. He has been working in the animation field since 1991 when he created the music for Nickelodeon’s Doug. Since that time he has written the music for many TV and film projects including 101 Dalmations, LA Lakers, Disney’s Stanley and Survivor.

Dan Erlewine has made his living as a guitar repairman and builder since 1963, when he apprenticed at The Herb David Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Since then he has owned and operated his own shop, under several names and in several locations: Erlewine Instruments in Ann Arbor (1969 — 1975); Dan Erlewine’s Guitar Hospital in Big Rapids, Michigan (1975 — 1986); and Dan Erlewine’s Guitar Shop in Athens, Ohio (1986 — present).

Danelectro was founded by Nathan Daniel in 1947; throughout the late forties, the company produced amplifiers for Sears, Roebuck and Company and Montgomery Ward. In 1954, Danelectro started producing the Danelectro lines of solidbody electric guitars and amplifiers, and also working as a “jobber”, that is producing guitars and amps by contract, that were branded not with the Danelectro name, but with the names of various store brands, such as Silvertone and Airline.

Dani Joy aka DaniUkulele, is a California singer/songwriter who croons her melodies and picks the ukulele with a smoky lounge allure. She is a gifted teacher at The Strum Shop and is a member of the River City Ukulele Orchestra, as well as an active ambassador for the Ukes for Schools Program.

Daniel Ho’s simple philosophy of presenting music with sincerity and artistry encompasses six consecutive GRAMMY Awards, number-one albums on national airplay charts, and top-ten albums on Billboard. In 2010, his solo ukulele CD, Polani (Pure), was the first ukulele album in music history to receive a GRAMMY nomination. On piano the following year, he received a nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album for his CD, E Kahe Malie (Flowing Gently). Most recently, in 2012, Daniel’s album On A Gentle Island Breeze was nominated for a GRAMMY in the World Music category.

Luthier "James R. DeCava" was born and raised in Stratford, Connecticut. As a young teenager, he began playing guitar and banjo and soon realized that if something needed repair on his instruments, he had to do it himself as there were few repair people around at that time. He began meeting others with similar interests and came into contact with the well known Liberty Banjo Co. He worked for them for many years making banjos, doing repairs, and cutting-inlaying mother of pearl with intricate designs. Over the years, he has built hundreds of guitars, banjos, mandolins, and one-of-a-kind instruments. He has also become well known for building multi-string instruments.

I grew up singing the songs I learned from my grandmother in Northeast Texas. I began playing the songs of the rural South on ukulele at age 11. When I was 16 my mother saved up all her Green Stamps and ordered a Kay banjo for me which I quickly re-tuned to sound like a ukulele. I worked my way through college playing and teaching music. In 1971, I moved to Austin and had a chance to play at the Checquered Flag with some of the great Texas songwriters like Alan Damron, Rusty Weir, and Shake Russell.

Mary Lou fell in love with its gentle harp like sound. In the fall of 1998, she accepted an invitation to attend a Ukulele Seminar at Harvard University in Boston. She is a member of the Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum and the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). Several books written by Mary Lou, published by Mel Bay Publications Incorporated are: Easy Ukulele Method Book 1, Easy Ukulele Method Book 2, Sacred Music for the Ukulele with play along CD and the Easy Baritone Ukulele Method Book One. "Dennis Sandole" (é Dionigi Sandoli 29 September 1913 — 30 September 2000 Philadelphia) was an American virtuoso jazz guitarist, composer, and music educator from Philadelphia. He was John Coltrane’s mentor from 1946 until the early 1950s, introducing him to theory beyond chords and scales and exposing him to the music of other cultures. Mr. Sandole taught advanced harmonic techniques that were applicable to any instrument, using exotic scales and creating his own. Sandole taught privately until the end of his life.

There is a mystical detour along the road of American Roots Music, right before genres had drawn lines in the sand proclaiming this to be "bluegrass" or that to be "honky-tonk". The lines were imposed during the advance of technology with the likes of 78 record players and radio coming into fashion. It was a great melting pot of swing, blues, jazz, and old-time country where all manner of musicians would simply play popular music, seemingly without apology or without being hemmed in by commercial restriction. You would hear rural outfits playing their own version of jazz or polished urban swing bands performing rustic mountain music. County by county, region by region, state by state, music would adapt, shift and morph to take on the fabric of its surroundings.

Jean “Django” Reinhardt (January 23, 1910 – May 16, 1953) was a Belgian Sinto Gypsy jazz guitarist. He was one of the first prominent jazz musicians to be born in Europe, and one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time.

Doc’s Stringed Instruments is a proverbial “one man show”. By nature somewhat a recluse, the concept of building instruments by the thousands in a factory employing dozens of workers is simply foreign to me. My desire is to build each instrument myself, by hand, to the best of my ability.

The Dock Street Uke Camp is dedicated to providing a unique quality ukulele instruction experience on the harbour front of beautiful Shelburne. The camp is held in conjuntion with the popular Whirlygig and Weathervane Festival.

Luthier Brad Donaldson of Cannon Beach, Oregon. I have been a part time luthier for 28 years. As a Seattle native, my real job was running the ambient air monitoring network for Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. I retired from the agency in 2005, moved to Cannon Beach and have been free to pursue my passion of building instruments since. I started out making ukes at first, but as there was not much interest in them, switched to making mandolins and guitars. I am very glad that the ukulele has become popular again, it was the first instrument I learned to play and is the most fun for me to build.

Don's first efforts involved the steel from the door of an old Volvo car but I soon realised it was way too heavy. Don would lay awake at night thinking of ways to overcome difficulties and eventually got one guitar made well enough to string it up.

I have retired from professional lutherie as of 2011 I am no longer taking orders for guitars. But I am still happy to answer questions about my guitars or lutherie in general!

Doug made his first guitar in 1970, when dissatisfaction with various commercial guitars prompted a colleague to suggest he make one. His association with making and repairing instruments has been continuous since then.

Formed in 2007, the Durham Ukulele Orchestra organically grew out of the ukulele jam session held at High Strung Violins and Guitars (and ukuleles!) on the first and third Mondays of every month. When Ray and Sue Mooers started Dusty Strings in 1979, Ray built hammered dulcimers in the couple’s basement, and the two played and sold them at festivals and craft fairs. John D’Angelico was born in Little Italy, on Manhattan's Lower East Side. At only 9 years old, he became an apprentice to his grand uncle Signor Ciani, an expert violin and mandolin maker. This apprenticeship would become the basis for construction principles he later incorporated into his world-renowned archtop guitars.

In 1966, Bob Gault founded what was to become the world’s largest loudspeaker manufacturing company after working as an engineer for Magnavox and CTS (Chicago Telephone Supply). Ironically, Gault started Eminence hoping to maintain three 18″ speakers per day, based on a commitment from Ampeg’s Everett Hull. I’ve been making guitars for over 20 years. I started out working for guitar and pickup maker Tom Doyle in New Jersey and later opened my own shop. The guitar started as a collaboration between guitarist Lenny Argese, Bob DeVos and me. Bob was working with organist Charles Earland and Charles played loud. Primarily teachers an 8 day course on guitar making. Eric teachs a class every month with just 2 students to a class and each student builds a roughly "OM" sized acoustic flattop guitar. Also maintains a website for online instruction with blog entries on all things related to acoustic stringed instrument making.

Eric Schreiber is a Philadelphia area based musician and composer. He currently performs regularly in numerous jazz, rock, and classical ensembles … and has released several CDs and DVDs in various styles. Most notably, Eric is currently a member of ‘The Chuck Anderson Trio’; which has been featured worldwide on numerous jazz radio stations, television, and jazz magazines … with ‘The Nerve’; which has been featured on 93.7 WSTW and other local programming … and with ‘Shades of Silver’; a diverse event band performing music from the 40’s through today. Eric has also worked as a freelance studio bassist with numerous artists and composers; covering a variety of musical styles and situations (rock, jazz, country, commercial jingles, cable television themes, etc).

I was born in Budapest in l944 and am American by naturalization. My family and I arrived in this country when I was fifteen. Besides Hungary and the U.S. I have lived in Austria, England, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Spain.

Frank Finocchio teaches novices to make beautiful guitars in a little workshop in Northeast Pennsylvania. Finocchio’s involvement with musical instruments began when he was 8 years old; one day his father placed a full accordion on his lap and told him to learn to play it. He did. As a young man in the Coast Guard, Finocchio spent hours in the ship’s machine shop learning to use the machine tools. He then worked as a machinist at a compressor manufacturing company, and in 1989 was hired by Martin Guitar Company to work at the Saw Mill purchasing wood for high-end furniture makers. Soon Frank was consulting for Martin on the purchase of exotic woods for instruments and Woodworkers Dream (an outlet for wood workers).

I have been building what I believe to be innovative, creatively conceived guitars and basses, pickups, and reinforcement systems for over 35 years. I have been influenced by countless other luthiers and have been proud to have seen my own influence in the work of luthiers around the world. In addition to my work as a custom luthier I have spent a considerable part of my schedule teaching lutherie.

I was raised in the potato farming region of northern Maine. After attending tech school I moved to the southeast and lived in Atlanta, Fayetteville, NC., and Nashville over the next eighteen years. Though as a teenager I desired to build guitars, my uneducated early attempts never saw completion and life demanded that I earn a living. I made that living in a cabinet shop in Atlanta where I learned many of my woodworking skills. I married a southern girl, Tracy, who has amazingly remained at my side for 28 years. I did fixits and paint jobs on friends’ guitars along the way but was in my 30’s before becoming serious as a luthier. I was later hired by Gibson Guitars to assist in developing their Dobro line of resophonics. I moved to the coast of Maine in 1999 to be near my family. In 2001 I started my own guitar shop doing repairs and building custom instruments.

With the lack of a strong ukulele market in Slovenia and the far corners of the European Union (EU), Flight set out to bring the ukulele to the European masses in 2010. With a model of simply focusing on what they love to do, the team at Flight has made a splash in international markets.
