John King

John King

Upon learning that the ancestor of the modern guitar was tuned similarly to the ukulele, he reacquainted himself with the instrument, commissioning an Italian luthier to make a classical ukulele for him. With it, he revived a guitar-playing technique from the Baroque era: succeeding notes are played on different strings, allowing the previous note to continue ringing. Known as campanella style, which means 'little bells' in Latin. His influential book The Classical Ukulele is part of Jim Beloff’s Jumpin’ Jim’s Ukulele Masters series.

King recorded two records and wrote several books of ukulele arrangements. He did extensive research into the history of classical guitar and the ukulele, writing numerous essays. He wrote an encyclopedia of Hawaiian luthiers. He was working on a history of the ukulele with Jim Tranquada at the time of his death which was published in 2012, The Ukulele: A History, published by the University of Hawaii Press.

Johnny Smith

An extremely diverse musician, Johnny Smith was equally at home playing in the famous Birdland jazz club or sight reading scores in the orchestral pit of the New York Philharmonic. From Schoenberg to Gershwin to originals, Smith was one of the most versatile guitarists of the 1950s. Smith’s playing is characterized by closed-position chord voicings and rapidly ascending lines (reminiscent of Django, but more diatonic than chromatically-based). From those famous 1952 sides and into the 1960s he recorded for the Roost label, on whose releases his reputation mainly rests. Mosaic Records has issued the majority of them in an 8-CD set.

Jon Prown

Jon Prown

After playing fingerstyle and rock guitar for about 30 years--with a brief banjo foray taken in the early 1980s--I discovered the uke in June 2005. Now I pretty much only play the uke. Primarily am interested in emulating or creating solo instrumental versions of songs I like and sometime I even work out songs I don’t really like. Also am very much inspired by the technical virtuousity of Jake and James and other killer progressive uke players.

I custom build and repair guitars in my own shop and I couldn’t be happier. I thoroughly enjoy creating these instruments. I pay absurdly close attention to detail, but the result is very worth the extra time. My work has become my meditation as well as my creative outlet. Without it, I would be lost. And without my friends, family, and the others who have believed in me and supported my endeavors, none of this would have been possible.

Joshua Tree Music Festival

These independently produced music festivals are held annually in the shadows of the infamous Joahua Tree National Park. They are two (of the very few) multi-day campout music festivals in Southern California featuring live music. Music lovers of all ages enjoy this phenomenal live music in an intimate setting and magical surroundings. The spring festival features an eclectic line up of performers; dance-world-electro-funk’n groove. The fall fest differs musically with artists of the more rootsicana-newgrassy-folkadelic realms. The two different musical stylings create distinct audiences at the festivals, but many folks do attend both. The town of Joshua Tree is located in the high desert of the magical Mojave, 50 minutes from Palm Springs, 2.5 hour drive from LA, 3 from San Diego, 3.5 from Vegas, and 5 from Phoenix, at the entrance to the world renowned national park.

Have loved music and dance all my life. Enjoy all kinds of music, but my favorite is Hawaiian. I have been playing and teaching ukulele since 1985. I plunk at piano for my own amazement and have taken private and class lessons on that instrument. I am a closet percussionist and recently began playing simple tunes on harmonica. I have taken steel guitar lessons, but haven’t made time to practice. I am a songwriter and enjoy the creative process. I also dance and teach hula, which may explain why I don’t have time to practice music. ;-)
